Notes

Tips

  • Use stale sourdough bread: This helps the bread cubes soak up the olive oil and seasonings better, resulting in perfectly crispy croutons.
  • Ensure even coating: Thoroughly mix the bread cubes with oil and seasonings in a large bowl to guarantee every piece is evenly coated for full flavor.
  • Bake in a single layer: Spread the coated bread cubes in a single layer on a parchment-lined sheet pan to ensure they bake evenly and turn golden brown.

Storage

  • Storage containers: Store your croutons in an airtight container, such as a glass jar or zip-top bag, to keep them crispy and fresh.
  • Refrigeration: Refrigeration isn't necessary for sourdough croutons. They are best stored at room temperature in an airtight container.
  • Shelf life: When stored properly at room temperature, sourdough croutons can last up to 2 weeks while maintaining their crunch and flavor.
  • Freezing: You can freeze croutons in a freezer bag for up to 3 months. Make sure they are completely cooled before freezing to avoid moisture buildup.
