Can You Milk A Highland Cow?

The Ultimate Guide

I’ve learned a lot about how to milk a Scottish highland cow in the last few weeks. Here’s my ultimate guide to all the things you should know.

Reasons I love Highland Cows

– hardy breed

– thrives in harsh conditions

– cold climates are not an issue

– can be used as beef cattle or as dairy cows

What You'll Need

-halter -leather neck strap -feed pail -milking bucket -small jar -few rags/cloth -pen for calf

Step 1

Bring your cow to your designated milking area. The best place for milking will depend on your setup.

Step 2

Secure your cow by tying her securely to the fence post or safely enclosing her in the milking box.

Step 3

Gently cleanse her teats by first using the warm water rag to remove any dirt or residue, ensuring thorough cleaning. Follow this by gently patting dry with a clean, dry cloth.

Step 4

Milk a little bit of milk onto the ground. This will help clean out the milk duct and make sure there are no bacteria present in the milk you keep.
